Helping Breedlove Foods Make a Difference Against COVID-19
06/04/2020
nVenia's food manufacturing customers come in all shapes, sizes, and industry segments – from produce manufacturers packaging lettuce or apples to snack and candy companies. However, one of the most unique and rewarding projects we’ve worked on over the years has been the support we’ve given to Breedlove Foods in Lubbock, TX.
Breedlove is a commercial-sized nonprofit food processor dedicated to humanitarian aid – a cause which became even more crucial as people around the world struggled to adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In operation since 1994, Breedlove develops and produces domestic and international food products, shipping it to areas of need – including hunger-stricken communities around the globe, areas affected by natural disaster or war, and other areas (including local U.S. communities) where people are experiencing hunger or food shortage. Supporting communities across the U.S. and in more than 70 countries around the world, the company has produced more than 2 billion servings of food for those in need.
Breedlove first connected with nVenia’s OHLSON Brand in 2011. Since then, we’ve worked with them to deliver multi-head weighers, vertical form fill seal bagging machines, and other equipment to help Breedlove expand to meet its growing production needs – and make sure that the money they raise does as much good as possible.
“We really appreciate what the OHLSON Brand has been able to do for us,” said Bill Miller, Breedlove CEO. “The weighers and baggers have been an instrumental part in our ability to increase productivity and production capability. Since we worked with the OHLSON Brand, we have moved from producing around 200,000 meal servings daily to near 2,000,000.”
Breedlove has been able to make such a large impact because of its unique product design featuring easy-to-prepare dehydrated meals. The meals have a 24-month shelf life, and because 90% of the water has been removed, they provide more servings per weight, per package. Preparation only requires water and around 30 minutes of cooking time.
The work Breedlove has been doing became even more important as communities everywhere dealt with the impact of COVID-19, as the company sent out more than 10.3 million servings of food in response to the pandemic.
“All of the meals we make go to domestic and international food relief,” Miller says. “There is a huge demand out there compounded by the COVID-19 crisis.”
Breedlove’s food is delivered to people both in the U.S. and around the world through its various partnerships – including food relief distribution agencies such as Catholic Charities and Meals On Wheels, as well as state food banks and other resources for those in need.
